Want a clean disk but keep the OS
We have an older PC and just got a nice newer refurb to replace it with.

We want to wipe all personal stuff off the HD of the old one, and keep the OS so we can sell it for SOMETHING.

Just format the HD? Will that suffice?

RE: Want a clean disk but keep the OS
Just format is not enough to securely wipe all your stuff. It can be undone.
With dban you can wipe everything on the HD very securely.
http://www.dban.org/
Be carefull, this completly wipes HD, no chance of going back.

Keep the OS ? What OS ? Im guessing Windows.
You cant keep the OS if you wipe the whole HD.
So you would have to reinstall the OS after the wipe. (restore factory settings)
If the reinstall files are on de HD itself you cant wipe the HD with dban.
You would lose the option to reinstall your OS.

For a better answer we need more information.
What OS ?
Where is your stuff ? (on same partition as OS or on a different partition)
Is there a reinstall OS option (restore to factory settings)

Windows 7, and yes, on the same partition. I think we may have the original disks from Dell but it's probably not worth worrying about. Thanks.

Will probably just wipe the whole thing and toss it.

Wait...I just checked and we have several Dell disks here. A Windows Vista Reinstallation DVD. A Windows XP Pro Reinstallation. A Windows 7 Upgrade Option. A Windows 7 Upgrade Assistant.

OK, so no problem to wipe HD with dban and reinstall OS.
