why we need firewalls?
Firewalls are usually seen as a requirement if you are going to attach your network to other networks, especially the Internet. Unfortunately, some network administrators and managers do not understand the strengths a firewall can offer, resulting in poor product choice, deployment, configuration and management. Like any security technology, firewalls are only effective if the implementation is done properly and there is proper maintenance and response to security events.

Additionally, with the proper deployment of firewalls other security strategies are often much easier to integrate, such as VPNs and IDS systems. So what makes firewalls good, and what can you do to ensure they are used properly?

RE: why we need firewalls?
Having a firewall is now mandatory. In fact, we are still far away from the threats posed by the Internet even if we have one. However, there are at least 5 reasons why you must ensure that your firewall is up and running.
1.Loss and Manipulation of Data: If you own a business, you deal with tons of data everyday -- data that belongs to your company and data that belongs to your customers. This data is extremely critical and the loss of which could plummet your company into a smörgåsbord of problems.
2.Business Secrets and Confidential Data:As a business, you would have drawn up plans on your net product launch; very critical blue-prints for the next or current construction projects might be stored right in the heart of your computer networks. Do you have a way to stop someone (say hackers, competitors or anyone with an intention) intruding into your system?
3.Hijacked Networks: If someone decides to manipulate your network, it is easy to break into your computer systems and manipulate the systems for their own use.So it prevents from Hijacking your network.
4.Lost time (Down time) -- Time is money? Lost time is lost money? Some hackers just want to have fun, grab attention, take revenge, or demand certain things and they could just set up a DDOS or DOS (Denial of Service) attack.
Loss of Reputation: If you were to lose your customer’s information or some secret information which can be critical to your business success, what would you tell your stake-holders?

Firewall is in other hand a program which protects your system from outsider/intruder/hacker attacks. Firewalls and Antivirus software are important components of Internet safety Firewalls are used to limit incoming transmissions to those that are least likely to contain bad data.

RE: why we need firewalls?
When you go through the Internet, we are putting potentially sensitive data that reside on our PCs vulnerable to hacker attacks intended to ensure that the data for any reason including possible use in criminal activities. If your system has been hacked, you get a call one day from the application of laws requiring you to explain why he tried to enter their website. Having a firewall mitigates this risk which could save his reputation in the process.

RE: why we need firewalls?
Firewalls are used to prevent unauthorized Internet users from accessing private data to the Internet, especially intranets. It's like a Border Force.. , It will take the responsibility to not let any one go out and not let any one come inside.

RE: why we need firewalls?
A firewall is a part of a computer system or network that is designed to block unauthorized access while permitting authorized communications. It is a device or set of devices which is configured to permit or deny computer based application upon a set of rules and other criteria.

A firewall's basic task is to regulate some of the flow of traffic between computer networks of different trust levels. Typical examples are the Internet which is a zone with no trust and an internal network which is a zone of higher trust. A zone with an intermediate trust level, situated between the Internet and a trusted internal network, is often referred to as a "perimeter network" or Demilitarized zone (DMZ). So to protect our computer we strongly need firewall.
